Electrical Engineer

Position Overview

HySA Infrastructure CoC is focussed on becoming an internationally recognised Centre of Competence (CoC) for research and product development for hydrogen production, storage and distribution, addressing the specific needs of South Africa and gearing maximum participation to derive the full benefit of South African strategic reserves and capabilities. Through our activities we will contribute to the improvement of the competitiveness of the South African industry and the quality of life of all South Africans. We also believe that we will be able to contribute to the preparation of South Africa to participate in hydrogen-related applications, primarily by beneficiating its resource base in becoming a significant supplier of material, components, products, sub-systems and systems for export, as well as appropriate introduction of technology, related to hydrogen production, storage and distribution in the South African economy. HySA Infrastructure CoC is currently seeking an experienced, highly motivated, quality-minded, and detail-oriented Electrical Engineer to join our team.

Responsibilities:         

  • Be part of the system development and integration team developing renewable energy systems, electrolysis systems and hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Participate in systems design and engineering processes, as part of cross-functional teams.
  • Design and develop, in a hands-on manner, electrical architecture and system schematics from concept to functional product / system.
  • Produce software and controls documentation such as logic diagrams, I/O lists, and test reports.
  • Test and debug electrical hardware and software during the installation and commissioning process of custom projects and;
  • Other duties as required.

Educational Requirement

  • University degree in electrical engineering

Experience Requirements

  • 5 to 10 years experience.

Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of electrical systems design, system-level programming, debugging, and test.
  • Basic working knowledge and understanding of electrical, mechanical and process control systems.
  • Design experience with off-grid and grid-tied solar PV systems.
  • Design experience integrating PLC software with sensors / process instrumentation and actuators in a process control environment.
  • Design experience with tools for generating electrical schematics (eg. E-Plan, Solid Edge) and electrical bills of materials for highly complex projects.
  • Experience with design tools such as SolidWorks and simulation platforms Simulink and LabView.
  • Hands-on programming experience with multiple PLC platforms; ABB, Siemens, National Instruments.
  • Knowledge of CAN Bus and Ethernet Communication protocols is an asset.
  • Hands on experience interfacing and integrating software and electrical/electronic hardware with power electronic subsystems, electro-mechanical systems (motors, pumps, etc.) and/or subsystems with multiple control I/O.
  • Ability to communicate equally effectively – verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced and interdisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to respond to frequent pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of working with minimal supervision.

Mechanical Engineer

  • Test and debug hardware and software during the installation and commissioning process of custom projects and;
  • Other duties as required.
  • Creating system layouts from user requirement specifications, design schematics and diagrams, safety requirements as well as national and international standards.

Post-doc positions

Hydrogen storage in liquid organic carriers (2016)

HySA Infrastructure is looking for a postdoctoral candidate in the field of hydrogen storage using liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). The project scope includes: hydrogenation/de-hydrogenation system design, new LOHCs derivatives synthesis containing high hydrogen intake/release capacity, and catalyst design for high activity, stabiity and selectivity. A PhD in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry is preferable. Activities will take place cross functionally at North-West University/HySA hub and CSIR/HySA hub.
